The NHL announced Thursday it had purchased the Chicago Cubs’ Wrigleys Field home.
The purchase was first reported by The Associated Press.
“We’re very excited to bring this incredible ballpark back to Chicago and to the entire world,” Blackhawks owner Rocky Wirtz said in a statement.
“It’s going to be a great, exciting and dynamic place.”
Chicago’s Wrigles Field has been a regular home of the Cubs for more than 60 years, but the Cubs had a contract dispute with the league in the 1980s and the team moved to Wrigle Field in 2005.
Cubs owner Joe Maddon said in 2016 he wanted to sell the ballpark and that his goal was to bring Wriglies to Chicago.
“I don’t think that it’s ever been done,” Maddon told the Chicago Tribune.
“To be able to have a ballpark that is going to last that long, I think that’s a pretty big deal.”
Wriglys home also hosted the World Series of Hockey in 2017.
“There are a lot of good memories for a lot, and a lot are very emotional, and this is a great opportunity for us to bring a great fan experience back to the city of Chicago,” Cubs President Theo Epstein said in the statement.
